Ask the expert: What should I wear to dinner on a cruise ship?

Dress etiquette is a thing many first-time cruisers wonder about. There are some cruise lines like Cunard which have strict formal nights which means passengers must bring their tuxedos and ball gowns.

Generally, most cruise lines will permit more casual wear but there are a few simple rules to follow when it comes to dressing etiquette.

asks the Assistant General Manager of Chan Brothers Nancy Koh what you should wear to dinner on a cruise ship.

“The individual cruise lines have differing dress codes. This may also depend on the passenger mix on the particular cruise.

It is good to refer to the specified dress code according to each cruise liner for casual, smart casual or formal nights so you don’t feel out of place. When in doubt, opt to dress up rather than dress down.

While most cruise liners prefer not to turn people away at dining venues, a rule of thumb for the traditionally more casual Asian travellers is to steer away from shorts, slippers, tank tops and caps during dinner.”
