Italy is one of the most visited destinations in Europe and has an abundance of history and culture. From Rome, the capital, which has a stunning array of churches and fantastic art galleries, to the black-pebble beaches of Positano, Italy is such a diverse country. Rome is home to the Vatican and its historic St Peter’s Basilica and Sistine Chapel with its ornate ceiling painted by Michelangelo. In Venice, take a Gondola ride through the canals and be serenaded by your gondolier or enjoy a (very expensive) espresso in St Mark’s Square. Italy is also the home of many famous fashion labels including Gucci, Armani, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Fendi, so for the shopaholics, there is plenty to buy. Another thing Italy is known for is its fantastic food. Varying from region to region, Italian favourites include pasta and pizza, gelato and wonderful local cheeses and wines. The Italians are also famous for their desserts so make sure you try tiramisu and cassata.
PLACES TO STAY
Central Rome is packed with cool and quirky boutique hotels, often tucked into medieval buildings. Villa Spalletti Travelli has just 12 bedrooms and gives the feel of staying in your own private palazzo stuffed with antiques and art. Parlamento is a great budget option close to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain with a charming roof terrace looking out over the city. In Venice, Al Ponte Mocegino is a 10-bedroom gem with its own private bridge over the Rio San Stae. It takes up the lower two floors of a traditional Venetian mansion and has a sunny courtyard where breakfast is served. If you’re looking for luxury, it’s hard to go past the Aman Canal Grand, the Hotel Cipriani or the Gritti Palace, arguably some of the best and most glamorous hotels in the world.
